Jenny August

Profile

I am currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institut für Mathematik in Bonn, where I started in October 2019. I completed my PhD at the University of Edinburgh, where I was supervised by Michael Wemyss, and before this, I gained a BSc with Honours at the University of Edinburgh and a MASt from the University of Cambridge (Part III Mathematics).
My research centres around the interplay between noncommutative algebra and algebraic geometry with additional links to homological algebra, cluster-tilting theory, Bridgeland stability and hyperplane arrangements. So far, my focus has been on finite dimensional contraction algebras which were introduced by Donovan and Wemyss as an invariant of certain birational maps, known as 3-fold flopping contractions.

Teaching

Whilst studying for my PhD at the University of Edinburgh, I also worked as a tutor for the School of Mathematics. During my time there, I tutored the following courses:

Galois Theory, Honours Algebra, Honours Algebra Skills (using Maple Programming), Honours Analysis, Fundamentals of Pure Mathematics, (Accelerated) Proofs and Problem Solving, Engineering Maths 1A and Maths for the Natural Sciences 1A.
I was also involved in supervising the online forum Piazza for Proofs and Problem Solving, where students could anonymously ask and answer each others questions about the course.

Organisational Roles

In 2016-17, I was one of two Postgraduate Representatives in the School of Maths. This involved attending meetings within the school to put forward PhD students' views about their studies and tutoring, as well as organising regular social events including the department's Christmas Party.

For 2017-18 and 2018-19, I was one of the co-organisers for the Glasgow Edinburgh Algebra Research Student seminar (GEARS) which is an informal meeting between algebra PhD students and postdocs from Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, and Glasgow universities.
